Augmented Reality Using QR codes

I based my augmented reality project on the Virginia Grade 6 Reading SOL, with a focus on the following:

6.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction, and poetry.

a) Identify the elements of narrative structure, including setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme.

b) Make, confirm, and revise predictions.

c) Describe how word choice and imagery contribute to the meaning of a text.

d) Describe cause and effect relationships and their impact on plot.

f) Use information in the text to draw conclusions and make inferences.

g) Explain how character and plot development are used in a selection to support a central conflict or story line.

h) Identify the main idea.

i) Identify and summarize supporting details.

j) Identify and analyze the author’s use of figurative language.

k) Identify transitional words and phrases that signal an author’s organizational pattern

I chose the following poem for its use of figurative language and its details surrounding Beethoven's life as a musical prodigy. The reason I chose this particular poem was for its word choice, imagery, and use of figurative language. Also, I found it an excellent example for students to draw conclusions about the abuse inflicted by Beethoven's father during his childhood. The QR codes lead to a website about Beethoven's life, a website about the author, and even QR codes that allow a student to learn more about a selection of lines from the poem and what type of figurative language device it's exemplifying. The main goal for this would be to have this enlarged on a large poster board where it can hang up on a classroom wall and students can use either a QR Code Scanner app on their Ipad or Smartphone to learn more about the poem.

If you would like to see the document in more detail with the ability to scan the QR codes, please open up the following PDF file:
